TNT Series Season 01 (2012)

TNT Series Time Period

How long has passed since the end of the original series and the new one? Twenty real years have passed since the original series was cancelled, so logically that is how long has passed in fictional terms.

However there are issues with this as the series makes frequent mention to “Thirty years ago” placing events in around season 4 that either couldn’t have happened or else would require a lot of off screen events to take place. Examples of this are how long Bobby’s lawyer has been working for him and Cliff’s adopted son.

At first I thought this could be explained by the series actually being set thirty years after the end of the original series. However this doesn’t fit in with the ages of Josh Henderson and Jesse Metcalfe who are the correct age for John Ross and Christopher if only twenty years have passed.

The final piece of evidence for twenty years having elapsed is the year on JR’s grave stone which clearly states he died in 2013.

Episode 1: Changing of the Guard

Bonehead Dialogue Award:

"I don't miss mister, not at any range", Ann to the Southfork Intruder.

Angelica Award:

None.

Pam Award:

Rebecca in her tennis outfit.

Bobby Award:

None.

April Award:

Ann for not shooting the intruder at point blank range when she had the chance.

NGN Stephen's Corner:

- So, JR Returns and War of the Ewings has been excised from continuity. In which case so has the explanation of what happened to JR in the last episode of the original series. Did he shoot himself and survive and then Bobby had him committed explaining his current situation? For that matter what happened to Don Lockwood?

- So Elena, was living at Southfork unseen all the time? I guess we now know what ‘the boy’ was getting up to while the family were having drinks before dinner.

- I must have missed the bit where John Ross spent all his time in boarding schools.

- Wouldn’t John Ross have been drilling on Section 40?

- What on earth has happened to the interior of the house? I know they’re rich but you’d think having the entire internal structure of the house remade, with walls being moved would be going a bit overboard. I also can’t see Bobby going for it, he has too much sentimentality to complete destroy the structure of the house where he and his family lived for so long.

- On a similar note, everyone now seems to use the front door rather than the back.

- Ann bears a striking resemblance to Cliff’s one night stand in Cat and Mouse!

- JR sold Ewing Oil to Cliff at the end of the original series. John Ross references this. Have the family been living off the Ranch ever since? Is this why they seem to be considerably poorer since we last saw them?

- What happened to Jenna and Lucas?

- Ray and Lucy seem joined at the hip, have they suddenly remembered their earlier relationship?

- JR has spent twenty years practically as a vegetable and yet makes an amazingly quick recovery following a couple of visits from Bobby and John Ross. He obviously Read the Script and realised there was a Classic Plot Trick.

- There seems to be a distinct lack of chemistry between Bobby and Ann, I can’t take them seriously as a couple.

- Cabbaging: "The Barnes and Ewing's never did get along" Lucy to Christopher. Thanks for reminding Christopher of that Lucy, he might have forgotten after 30 years in the family.

- Not being a resident of Dallas, or even the USA, I’m sure if this is a nit or not, but the Cotton Bowl seems to have very lax security to allow people to just walk in and have a conversation in the middle of the pitch.

- On that subject why do they bother walking to the middle of the pitch, couldn’t they stayed in the car park (parking lot)? BILC

- Not a nit as such, but it doesn’t bode well that Larry Hagman still steals the show from everyone.

Episode 2: Hedging Your Bets

Bonehead Dialogue Award:

"Hey asshole" John Ross to Christopher.

Angelica Award:

None.

Pam Award:

Rebecca by default.

Bobby Award:

None.

April Award:

John Ross for trying to double-cross JR and for being careless in doing so.

NGN Stephen's Corner:

- JR and bobby never went to war over Southfork, they fought over Ewing Oil. JR never really cared about Southfork until Bobby took control of it.

- Mitch Lobell was bobby's lawyer for 30 years? Does Harve Smithfield know about this? Would it really have made a difference to say 20 years? Harve could have retired or died and Mitch took over. There is no logical reason to say 30 year except for sloppy writing.

- Everyone, including Bobby, seems to have forgotten that he was every married to April.

- The ‘Cattle Baron’s Ball’? Things have obviously gone a bit down market over the years. Jarring though this is, it does make sense, there is a real event called the Cattle Baron’s Ball held in Dallas. Also the number of independent oil companies left would probably leave the attendance a bit low at the Oil Baron’s Ball. Still I can’t help but feel that the fact it makes sense is purely accidental and that in reality it was misnamed and nobody picked up on it. Cynthia Cidre has more or less confirmed this.

- Do spy cameras usually have red recording lights? I guess John Ross isn’t into women on top!

- With the benefit of hindsight the whole conversation between Tommy and Rebecca in the kitchen is odd. They are alone but he refers to her as sis. This can’t be in case they are overheard as the rest of the their conversation is far more sinister than using her name. The tone of the conversation also paints Tommy as the driving force in their scheme. Later episodes bring this into question.
